John 8:31-36, John 14:1-3, Romans 8:16, 1John 5:13
1.) Stand Fast = Vs.1.
1Corinthians 16:13, Philippians 1:27 and 4:1, Thessalonians 3:8 and 2Thessalonians 2:15, Acts 15:10, John 8:34, Romans 6:16, Romans 8:2, Titus 2:14
What do I think freedom is?
Will I seek to understand the freedom Jesus has given me by grace and stand fast in it?
Do I see salvation in Christ as liberation?
What now have I done with this freedom?
2.) What Works and What Doesn’t = Vs.2-6.
Sin promises everything, but what it delivers is NEVER what it advertised.
Hebrews 3:12-14, Galatians 3:24
Legalism is trying to relate to God on the basis of what I do, rather than what He did for me.
Romans 10:1-4, 2Corinthians 5:21
Faith working through love emerges as all powerful.
3.) A Stone in Your Shoe = Vs.7-10.
Hebrews 12:1-2, 1Corinthians 9:24, 2Timothy 2:5 and 4:7
God will never hinder our spiritual growth.
1Corinthians 5:6-8, James 3:1, Matthew 18:6-7
4.) What Makes Gospel Sense = Vs.11-12.
Stick to what God’s Word says.
The offense of the cross is really the glory of the cross, and legalism takes this glory away.
1Corinthians 1:23 and 2:2
Christ “and” is NOT the Gospel!
Does what I am hearing make Gospel sense?
Know the Gospel well and you’ll always be able to spot false teaching.
5.) What Freedom is Good For = Vs.13-15.
The Christian life is a life of liberty.
John 8:31-36, Luke 4:18, Psalm 119:32 (old NIV), 1Corinthians 10:23
Liberty is the Spirit-given desire and ability to do what we should do before God.
Freedom is an opportunity to serve one another.
What are we using our liberty for?
The truth unites us in Christ.
Galatians 3:26-28, Ephesians 2:14-18
Truth brings unity. Deviation from that truth brings division. Choose liberty, that is, the liberty to do what God calls us to do.
