Matthew 23:1-5, 13-19 and 23-36, 2Peter 2:1-3
1.) Dying for Lack of Discernment = Hosea 4:6
Numbers 20:1-12, John 3, Acts 17
Some Christians are suffering because they have believed wrong things about God and themselves.
Aren’t we being egotistical by saying someone else is wrong?
2.) Identifying the False = Jude 3
We search God’s Word to discover the truth, and in the process identify the error.
John’s first test is fidelity to what God has already revealed in His Word.
What God has already revealed in His Word is our standard for what is true or false.
3.) We’re Not Always Right = Jude 3
There is no new revelation. There is only illumination of what God has already revealed.
When someone claims to be speaking FOR GOD, and what they say does not come to pass, then they have misrepresented God.
We’re not always right, but we ought to try to be.
4.) Humility is Not Gullibility = Acts 20:27-31
Most false doctrine starts with an emphasis on one or two ideas to the exclusion of all else.
1John 4:1, Ephesians 5:10
Discernment infers investigation.
Some Christians LOVE false doctrine.
Isaiah 30:9-11, 2Timothy 2:15
It is not “judgmental” to divide truth from error; it is spiritual survival.
